Travel Memories
March 19, 2009
Going to Europe may be a once in a lifetime opportunity for me, so I want to make sure that I remember everything and take in everything.
In an earlier post I mentioned that I will be purchasing a new camera, there are other ways that I will be documenting my trip as I go.
1. My Journal
I have been writing in a journal every night for five years. I have not missed a night and I love to write about my days, the good, the bad and the ugly. I know my journal will be full of exciting stories from my travels. we have a lot of time on trains and I will devote some of that time to writing in my journal.
2. My Blog
One of my friends recently brought to my attention how much easier it would be to do blog posts about my stories instead of individual emails. This will allow people to give me suggestions while I am in Europe. The only problem with this is I don’t know how often I will have access to a computer.
3.Postcards and Souvenirs
I would like to get a few mementos of the countries that I will go to. I may send some friends a few postcards, or if I find really nice ones, pic them up for myself.
When I get back I will make a photo album bringing all of these things together. Other than the photos, I will have quotes from my journal, suggestions that people have made on my blog and postcards that I bought in each country. This will make my photo album more of a memory book for this once in a lifetime opportunity.
Wow….sounds like you’ve got it all planned out! You’re so very organized, Elise. I hope you have an amazing trip. I will definitely go to Europe one day too, I just don’t know if I could do the whole backpacking thing. I might take several vacations to Europe over my lifetime instead. Be safe, though. A part of me always gets a little nervous when people do this. But I’m sure it’ll be great.

Hello, Elise
I like all your ideas, especially the souvenir one. When I lived in and traveled around England, I collected a lot of them: postcards, bookmarks, key chains and even pencil erasers (although they didn’t last so long; I guess I made a lot of spelling mistakes that year). When I look at them now, the memories flood back.

I too plan on travelling to Europe Elise, and purchasing a better camera is a number one priority for me! The one I have right now has a broken zoom, so I am in dire need of a new one. I visited my sister in Scotland a few years back and kept a journal the time I was there. I like reading it every now and again to reflect on the wonderful time I had overseas. I can’t wait to do it again!
I just want you all to know that I am the friend that mentioned the blog.
I like the idea of how you plan to document your travels. I never really think ahead with that type of stuff, I always forget my camera when I need it. I agree with the blog, and I think I would do the same, now that I know how to blog. The journal is always a great idea too.
Reading this makes me want to plan for a trip now.
Every trip I’ve ever been on, I vow to record it in writing with an account of the day’s events. I usually do well for the first couple of days, but then get swept up in all the fun and forget all about it. I try to remember all the things I wanted to write about, but it’s impossible to recount. I know you’ll be more dedicated to it than I always am, and you’ll have a great record of your trip to look back on and I look forward to asking you for tips and hints when I plan my own trip to Europe. You’re going to have such an amazing time.
You’ve done your research that’s for sure. I have a friend who is in Australia right now and she is doing a blog about her trip while she’s there for the same reason you’ve mentioned. I hope you have a great time!
I’m going to add you to the list of people that I now dislike. haha Just kidding. I am jealous you are traveling and I look forward to seeing any pics you may have/post when you get back
I went to england in 2005 and the best thing i did on that trip was collect small things and used them to make a scrap book when i got back
I collected phaphlets and business cards and tickets things that that. Nothing too big cuz you have to bring it back with you somehow
Good luck on your trip!
